New year! New guest post!
I’m super excited about this one because I’ve known the writer behind the latest City Guide for most of my life. From teen years to now our 30s (happy belated friend!), we’ve always been family. I’ll never forget the first time we met. He talked about how he would spend long stretches in Ghana and I was so mesmerized by how he became local to a place thousands of miles away. I never forgot this and after seeing pics from his latest visit, I knew I had to get him on the blog to hip us to the best of Accra.

Wedding Tings: My primary purpose for my trip to Ghana was to be a groomsman in a wedding for a friend I have known for over 15 years. The day in Accra I got fitted for custom outfits for the engagement party and the wedding. The wedding is held in two parts, the traditional engagement party where the groomsman presents the groom to the family of the bride, and the actual wedding ceremony later that week. Both events were unique however both ended with great food and an even better party. If you are invited to a Ghanaian wedding don’t hesitate, take advantage of the opportunity!
Airfare: Flights to Ghana (or anywhere in Africa) could tend to be expensive, but there are several airlines that offer flights to Accra for less than $1000. I found a direct flight from DC to Accra for $950 on South African Airways.
The Chicken Lady: So there is this roadside bar in Osu called Purple Pub that we would stop by to have a few local drinks before we headed out for the night. Picture an outdoor bar situated on an access road with music, disco lights, people dancing in the street and pool tables set up outside. Next to the bar is a small shack where a woman fries up some of the best chicken wings I have ever had. For 15 Cedis (about $3.50) she sells huge platters of wings and fried yams. As a (self-proclaimed) international street food connoisseur these wings got my stamp of approval.
Everything Black + Excellent
Kwame Nkruma National Memorial in Accra: “I am not African because I was born in Africa but because Africa was born in me” Ghana was the first African country to gain its independence from European colonizers and their first president Kwame Nkruma is honored with this memorial.
Elmina Slave Castle: Visiting this slave castle is an experience I will never take for granted. No words can describe feeling of walking through the cells where our ancestors were housed before being forced on to ships sent around the world. Though an emotional experience, I left with the biggest reminder of how strong and resilient our people were then and still are today (insert black fist emoji) .
Everything off the beaten path
I have close family friends in Ghana, so when I am in Accra I really live as the locals do. These spots give you a great local feel yet foreigners are welcome with open arms.
Twist Nightclub: Ghana has a dope music scene that is best experienced in one of Accra’s hot spots like Twist .One of Accra’s longest standing nightclubs and easily the most popular nightspots in the city. it is the place to be on Friday and Saturday nights and club stays open to at least 5am. Firefly Lounge is another cool spot to check out.
The Republic Bar: Dope indoor/outdoor spot with local frozen drinks and Karaoke on certain nights. Great place to sit outside with friends, have a cold drink and listen to the latest Afrobeats sounds.
Shisha Lounge: Yes that’s what the place is called lol. I stopped by this place with a friend for a quick drink and ended up partying there until 2 or 3 in the morning. Enjoyed some hookah, met some cool folks all over the world (ei: Brazil, Lebanon, Liberia etc.) and took way too many shots.
