One of my fave songs in 2016 was ASAP Twelvyy’s “Last Year Being Broke”. Going from years of a corporate salary (I was never ballin. <$50K Shawty) to leaving the fashion world and hitching on to my dream job at a museum with hourly pay was rough. Mama was broker than broke. I’d been so accustomed to booking flights whenever I felt on a whim and just jetting. That wasn’t my life anymore. I had the job I waited three years for, but back to asking my mom to cover my rent. I was so used to running running running, I used going home to Philly every two seconds to feed the urge to be constantly moving, so I wouldn’t go crazy.
This year though, I’m getting my coins up and using my impeccable skills as a (travel) writer to send me around the globe. Check out my 2017 travel plans. Some are legit set in stone. Others are aspirational. Can’t forget the ones I haven’t dreamt up yet. All will happen because me and my inner vortex said so!
I went to college in Atlanta, so I love any and every excuse to visit. I’ll be hitting my other home away from home twice this year and both for a good cause. I’m a delegate reppin’ NYC again at the UNCF national conference in February. Then this little Clark Atlanta Panther turns 10 as I celebrate along with the class of 2007 at our homecoming.
If you’ve never been and wanna come through, make sure you check out Atlanta’s city guide, courtesy of my beloved Mike from TheMan TheMuse.
Everyone is sick of me and my jaunts to LA. I know. I get it. Relax. A month last summer, only to be followed by an extended weekend in November. I promise you, I get it. However, duty calls in the form of the Soulquarious megaconcert. Tickets went on sale 11am PST and my order confirmation was in my inbox by 11:02am. I don’t play!
It’s a week before my bday, so I’m also using the weekend as a pre-birthday celebration since half of my NYC friends moved to LA and the rest of the East Coast crew is coming to the concert. Keep your eyes glued, I may do something super special.
I’ve been to New Orleans once and it was for a smooth 16 hours.
Alas, I’m doing it big for my 31st birthday by fully poppin’ my NO cherry during Mardi Gras! We’re upping the ante, by making this…a road trip! Oh the IG stories this trip will produce.
Scratch that – me and my mom are going to New Orleans to cut a fool at Essence Fest in July!
I had an amaaaaaazing time at SXSW last year and produced the bulk of my music journalist receipts. I hope to do the same again this year along with eating my weight in breakfast tacos from my fave spot!
I’ve been wanting to visit New Mexico for yeeeeears, but I never had anyone to go with. Alas, the universe introduced me to my friend’s best friend two weeks ago that lives where? NEW MEXICO! Ya’ll don’t even understand how stoked this desperado is to head to the desert!
After meeting a cute dude on my flight in Zanzibar back in 2014 that was from Lagos, I can’t keep that city off of my mind. I’m on a Europe hiatus (sorta) and really want to tear up the western coast of Africa. Two huge film festivals are held in Lagos in the fall and I need to be in that number.
There is a loophole to my Euro hiatus which is ‘visiting friends’. My goodgood bud Kelley up and moved to Berlin last year and I’ve been obsessing over visiting her. Berlin goes against my travel mantra of baking myself to a puff of black smoke on a beach, but I know Kellz and I are gonna have a f*n’ blast.
What far off lands are you plotting on this year? Any American cities you wanna wreak havoc all over?
Tell me! Tell me! Invite me!
