If you’re reading this, you made it through the shitstorm of death that was 2016.
Welcome to the other side ya’ll!
I love January. Gone is the thick layer of jadedness that gets all heavy and gross towards the end of the year. Everyone is so nice and hopeful. I’m excited for everything happening in 2017, especially all of the newness I’m bringing to you all via iSo14Below. Before we actually chuck 2016 into the abyss, we have to admit that it was one of the best 12 months of music that we’ve had in quite a while.
Let’s dive into the last minute December adds to the year.
CHILDISH GAMBINO X AWAKEN MY LOVE
Okay, not gonna lie to ya’ll, still haven’t listened to this album.
I have a hard time listening to recorded albums after hearing the songs live. I’ve yet to come down from the experience that was PHAROS, so I’m still so antsy about listening . I have a very particular routine to listen to music that has been hard to maintain due to the constant waterboarding of music. However, I’m locking in and getting into this album veryveryvery soon.
Nothing sucks more than being scared to use your plug. I grew up with one of the leads of “Hamilton”, but we haven’t seen each other in years, so I felt icky at just the thought of hitting him up for some tickets. Alas, the “Hamilton” soundtrack sufficed, but thennnnn the mixtape came. I know nothing about America’s history pre-black people glo-up, so the story of Hamilton was lost on me, but bless whatever happened to give us the mixtape. Jill Scott has a thot anthem on here, so do I really need to say anything else to ya’ll about this?
THE-DREAM X LOVE YOU TO DEATH
Terius. The R&B Gorilla. Need I say more?
Oh..I do have more to say about him actually. Scroll to the bottom of the page to read it.
KID CUDI X PASSION, PAIN
My love has awaken. I may have been the only one, but I looooooved Cudi’s last album. I actually waited until January 1st to listen to this one because I knew I had to be in a particular space to receive it. Scott Mescudi never fails me.
JEREMIH + CHANCE THE RAPPER X MERRY CHRISTMAS LIL MAMA
The young princes of Chicago came together to give their city some Christmas cheer. Chance is a pro at being cute and that’s exactly what this little EP is.
JUSTINE SKYE X 8 OUNCES
My R&B groupchat has struggled with our thoughts on Justine Skyy. It seemed like she was more interested in being a ‘Dashian instead of giving us music. “Collide” was my intro to Justine, that was nearly destroyed by a Tyga verse. I spent the better part of this last year wondering where the new music was and now, it’s here! Justine connected with Tricky and The-Dream for a project that made us all miss Ciara and Electrik Redd.
BJ THE CHICAGO KID X UNCLE MARVIN
BJ sang the stars out the sky in the last few seconds of Solange’s “FUBU” and I’m still trying to realign my spirit. He has such a rich voice that reminds me of when male R&B singers wanted nothing more than to pierce the f* out of your heart. I love that he brought Marvelous Marvin on for this particular ride.
MATT MARTIANS FT KARI KAUX X CAN’T SPEND THE NIGHT
Matt Martians does no wrong. Matt Martians does no wrong. Matt Martians does no wrong. Matt Martians does no wrong. Matt Martians does no wrong.
Martin Luther King had a dream and so did we at RnB Trivia! Come dance with us on January 9th at Trophy Bar as we celebrate Terius Nash.
