Grammy nominations came in today, so I’ve been cussin’ and pulling my hair out since about 9am.
BUT, God is still in the blessing business because two of my favorite projects of 2016 were delivered in the month of November. Take a listen, why dontcha?
Bruno Mars x 24K Magic
I literally hate Bruno Mars’ music as a full-time job, but dammit if he didn’t come through with “24K Magic”! I can’t stop playing this album, Top to bottom. No skipping. I’ve been forced to switch my top ten AOTY listing. ::shakes fist::
Tinashe x Nightride
It’s hard being a Tinashe fan. Her label continues to do her dirty. She still hasn’t gotten a solid stylist. Alas, mama reminded us why we joined the stan club in the first place…the music!
After giving us lackluster singles all year, “Nightride” is a beyond solid project. It’s not the album we were promised, but listen, if this is any indication of what we’ll be getting 2017, I may have to run for Parlimentarian.
Leslie Odom Jr x Simply Christmas
God I love Christmas music! Leslie Odom is Tony award-winning “Hamilton” star to many, but he’s a childhood bud to me. There are just some kids that ‘had it’ and we all saw that in him early. So proud of all that he’s accomplished and can’t wait to get my mom his holiday CD! All the old faves are accounted for with a satiny spin.
Jorja Smith x Project 11
London is still coming for heads…run for cover. Jorja Smith has been bubbling for a minute, but “Project 11” seems to have folks really paying attention. She kicked the door in with the opening track “Something in the Way”, so I’ve been sold ever since.
Joyce Wrice x Rocket Science
Soundcloud rappers get a bad rap, but the R&B on there is real deal. Case in point, Joyce Wrice.
Sing! Sing! Sing!
Childish Gambino x Redbone
I’m still not over those 24 hours in the desert for Childish Gambino’s PHAROS camping trip. I haven’t listened to “Awaken, My Love” yet in fear that the recorded album won’t stand up to hearing the album live and in full. “Redbone” was one of my fave songs at PHAROS and the perfect teaser for the album. I promise I’ll listen one day. Until then, just gonna relive the memories of my time inside of that white dome in the middle of Joshua Tree.
Sinkane x U’Huh
LoveLoveLove Sinkane around these parts. I call him the Sudanese Toro y Moi, just to give you guys an idea of his sound. I literally obsessed over his past projects all summer and so glad some new heat will be arriving at the top of 2017. In the meantime, he gave us a single “U’Huh” that has been keeping a smile on my face since it’s first listen. If ya’ll are questioning what the next four years in America will be like, take a haaaaard listen at these lyrics.
“We’re all gonna be alright/It’s always been this way/ There ain’t no golden age/ And we’ve always been alright”
HER x Yeah I Said It (Cover)
H.E.R. came saw and conquered the final months of 2016. With an incredible EP shaking up R&B Twitter, the phantom singer (some of us figured out who it was) came back for another round with a cover of Rihanna’ “Yeah I Said It”. It only makes sense that the queen of the internet would add her spin on a song by the queen of the world, right?
St. Beauty x Borders
It’s been really hard to sell me on St. Beauty outside of them being ridiculously gorg. But bayyyybeeeee, this “Borders” playeth not! If they stay on this wave, I’ll be a hardcore believer!
Phony Ppl x This Must Be Heaven
I’ve always been #TeamPhonyPpl, but I’ve become obsessed with the maturity of their sound. More jazzy and less kitschy rapper on live musicians schtick that many are still on. After a residency at the legendary Blue Note is positioning these BK boys as the jazz legends of our generation.
RnBTrivia is back this Monday and we’re celebrating the very important Kwanzaa principle, FAITH (Evans). RSVP here and come party with us one last time in 2016!
