I’m off to El Aye to pop my camp Flog Gnaw cherry in a measly FOUR days! I did so much on my last jaunt out there, so the kid is keeping it lowkey this go round. Since this trip is wrapped around music, it’s only right I share with ya’ll the music I’ll be bumpin’ throughout my quick stay.
If you live in LA and will be going to CFG or just wanna link up, get at meeeeeee.
Jojo x Mad Love
JoJo already had me on board years ago when she covered Jill Scott so flawlessly, but this album rightchea??? Not one game was played on “Mad Love.” I honestly don’t have the words. I just love this project so much.
Welcome back Joanna!
D.R.A.M. x Big Baby D.R.A.M.
BigBabyyyyyyyyy! D.R.A.M. is one of my fave new artists and his debut album lived up to all of my expectations. I interviewed him back in March and bay-bey, when I tell ya’ll he broke into “Total Praise” midway and sounded like somebody’s COGIC men’s chorus? Everyone pegs D.R.A.M. as a rapper, but he is one of the greatest singers of our generation. Pay attention to the slow jams on here. There are not to be skipped.
Daniel Ceasar ft. Kali Uchis
I love having musicheads for friends! My hometown homie Chris (of the Pay HMGE podcast) had been yelling at me about checking Daniel Ceasar for a while now. He dropped a song with Kali Uchis, who i lurrrrve, and I RAN to that link. I’ve been saying for a while that 2016 is the year of the male R&B singer and Daniel def has a seat at that table. He’ll be performing in NYC at SOBs on November 9th. Be my date?
SiR x Her
I’ve been harassing everyone about SiR since laaaaast year and it looks like people are finally waking up. He bridges the gap between Ro James and Iman Omari making him palatable between the coasts. “Her” is shorter than my into to him “Seven Sundays”, but better curated, making for a more seamless listen. My intuition on an underground artist proves golden again!
Saba x Bucket List Project
Chance the Rapper is having quite the year and his hometown homies are having quite the year. I’m still easing my way into Donnie and NoName, but Saba?! Saba the one! LoveLoveLove “Bucket List Project”! Can’t wait to hear it live when he plays with friend to the blog and my real life Moruf. Cop!
Jade de la Fleur x Toxic
I know summer is over, but JDLF’s “Toxic” is perfect ‘open the drapes and dance around the house naked’ feel good music! Jade makes music for girls that are sex-positive bad bitches. If that’s you and you need a soundtrack, get up on her discog!
Speaking of music, R’nB Trivia is happening November 21st and the theme is TGT! RSVP here for a night of bodyrolling to the greatness that is Tank, Ginuwine, and (sigh) Tyrese!.
