I have a month off from work, so I’m using that time to take a break from NYC!
I’m currently typing you from my mom’s house in Philly. I’m here for a few more days until I head to the Poconos area for some weekend psuedo glamping. Thennnnnn it’s off to LA for three weeks!
Besides being a master at vaca’ing on the cheap, I’m a master at packing. See this little duffle bag (vintage Levi’s denim c/o mom) here? I packed an entire two weeks of clothes for Paris and Morocco in this bag. #Honestly I know it sounds unbelievable, but follow these four tips and I promise you can do it too!
No Ironing Required
I’m a little biased on this one since I haven’t owned an iron since 2003. HOWEVS, going away should be about soaking up experiences, not ironing no d*mn clothes. Pack stuff that you can snatch out of your suitcase. slap on, and be out of the door.
Love It? List It
I went to Egypt when I was 16. The trip was awesome, but I still hate myself for leaving an entire drawer of clothes (including these FYE cow print pajama pants) in the hotel in Cairo. Ever since that day, I started making inventory lists of my clothes. I’ve never lost a garment ever since.
Don’t Be Afraid to Re-Run
This is vacation, not Paris Fashion Week. You don’t neeeeeed to be giving Shiona Turini street style. Who cares if you’re in Thailand for 10 days and cycling between two pairs of shorts the entire time? Answer…No one! For things that can’t be worn over and over, like undies, laundromats exist everywhere in the world. OR you can be real old school and hand wash in the sink.
Packing IS a Basics Zone
Rihanna famously talked about no basics zones, there actually is one…your suitcase. for trips under seven days, I pack by daily outfit. Any trip over that? My luggage will be 90% basics and the rest glitz’n’glam. Mix and match is the name of the game here. Pack a bunch of solids so you can build a ton of outfits out of it.
Thanks to rolling my clothes like the world’s tightest blunt, I fit my entire 3-week wardrobe, shoes, and accessories in these two small bags (without heels, the suitcase is barely knee-height and I’m 5’3) with room to spare for any good finds while I’m there. TBH, I could’ve put everything into one bag, but no need to break my back trying to be a show off ya’know? Outside of the aforementioned rolling of clothes, wear the heaviest/bulkiest clothes and shoes you packed to the airport. Oh, and make sure you print out Akelective Muse’s ultimate packing list, so you’ll never forget the essentials!
