Time really flies ya’ll!
I can’t believe it’s already been a year since the innaugural 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair. I had an amazing time and so stoked to be attending again this year.
Outside of the art itself, 1:54 has a full itinerary of talks and a new component this year, performances. I’m beelining over to Pioneer Works after work on Friday for Dexter Wimberly’s artist talk with one of my faaaaaaves ruby onyinyechi amanze!
Growing up in Philadelphia, I never truly appreciated how the city made work by artists from across the African diaspora accessible to us. The 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair gives New Yorkers, regardless of financial standing, the opportunity to do so and we gotta give them all the shoutouts in the world for doing so! Where Frieze (the massive art fair taking place the same weekend) will run you a smooth 50 bucks for a day pass, 1:54 is only $20 and tightly curated to highlight the best of the best work from the mother continent.
Whether you’re looking to have a fun day with your girls or trying to convince the jawn you’re talkin’ to that you’re cultured, 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair is the perfect move!
