The only reason I know is because my bank account is looking like a desert wasteland. #IsDaFirsUhDuhMunf
It’s cold and rainy here in NYC, but I love that music has the power to take you away. Dive into the tunes that have been helping me escape during the month of April.
Beyonce x Lemonade
I haven’t been a fan of Beyonce’s catalog since her debut, but “Lemonade” may be her best album yet. As a star of her magnitude, she’s never truly stretch boundaries or pushed the convo forward sonically, but “Lemonade” broke that curse. Serving as a mature version of “Writings on the Walls” or the middle class anything by Keyshia Cole/Monica, the songwriting is stellar. Bey is also sing-ging! I’ve never heard these vocal nuances from her and I love it! She’s the best wading in her lower register and she got her Jaz Sullivan on all over this album. Also, did ya’ll hear those DC3-esque harmonies throughout? I dunno about this black women’s empowerment stuff ya’ll talmbout, but musically, “Lemonade” a winner shawty.
musiq soulchild x life on earth
If Brandy is the vocal bible, Musiq Soulchild is the vocal blueprint. If we wanna be honest about sh*t on today, every ‘relevant’ R&B/gospel vocalist in 2016 is the child of either Brandy or Musiq. (Jazmine Sullivan excluded. She belongs to Kim Burrell) Musiq took a looooong break, but he’s back with an incredible album! Everything you loved about the flawless trifecta of his early albums is back with “Life On Earth”. Whatever you do, cop this album!
asap ferg x always strive and prosper
Ferg’s debut album was amazing! Still one of my faves from that year and it’s grossly underrated. He returned in April with the sophomore effort “Always Strive and Prosper”. I had a wildly unorganized month, so I missed my weekly Friday new music listening sessions. “ASAP” is in the queue, but in the meantime, the album single “New Level” has been holding me over, It’s the perfect mob song at parties, so DJs get this in your serato!!
gallant x ology
I haven’t spent enough time with Gallant, but I am for sure intrigued. I said that 2016 was the year of male R&B and I’ve been right. Check out his debut record “Ology”. ‘Shotgun’ and ‘Bourbon’ are highlights!
Ro James x Burn Slow
Ya’ll know I stan for Ro James. He’s seriously the one to watch for 2016! He’s going on tour with Maxwell and his debut album comes May 27th! He gifted us with “Burn Slow” to hold us over. I’m foaming at the mouth.
Fantasia x so blue
Fantasia easily has one of the three best R&B discographies of millennial artists. EASILY. I’ve been let down by her first two teaser singles, but that “So Blue”. Maaaaaan listen! That’s a bop and a blessin!
maxwell x Lake by the ocean
Max took a break from being an IG thot to not only give a release date for “Summers”, but a single too!
Erykah Badu x Been Thru It All
Badu says she’s an analog girl, but lil baby really a digital girl bc she stay on the ‘net finding that new new. She hopped on innernet rapper Wintertime’s hit “I Been Thru It All It”. Of course she snapped.
