We’re just over two months into 2016 and it’s already one of the best years for black music!
For any iSo14below newbies, ‘You Oughta Know’ is a series where I tell you all about new artists that I’m totally obsessed with that I predict will be huge in the near future.
For anyone looking for receipts, I went to Kendrick Lamar and Lianne la Havas’ first shows in NYC playing to about 100 people. I was on Kwabs back when he only had a few vids on YouTube. I saw SZA at a showcase days after her first EP “See SZA Run” dropped. I became a LionBabe fan the week they first posted “Treat Me Like Fire”.
Ya girl be knowin!
Besides talking about these incredible artists, I’ll also give some must-dos if you happen to visit their home cities. Ironically, I won’t be able to do this for this month’s artist because no one knows exactly who the f* he is!
I present to you….dvsn
My friend Kolby hit me up super hype one morning back in October telling me I have to listen to some new dude that popped up on Soundcloud just a few days before. The first song was “With Me”.
I wasn’t initially sold.
THEN this happened.
Highkey, I forgot it wasn’t a church song and morphed into Fantasia 30 seconds in. We’re living in a time when popular male singers can’t seem to do a song without a trap beat and autotune (hi Bryson + Tory), so I was stoked to find an artist that could get in the ring with BJ the Chicago Kid and Ro James.
I’m all for phantom artists. Remember how awesome The Weeknd’s music was before we saw his face??? If that’s they key to making music that will touch folks and live for generations….dvsn….forever remain in seclusion bae, because you da one!
