as the country comes together this weekend to celebrate the lives of fallen soldiers, brooklyn will descend upon the grounds of bam to honor the ancestors.
yup, it’s dance africa weekeeeeeeeeeeeeeend!
this is literally my favorite time of the year to live in brooklyn and i’ve looked forward to attending for my last eight years here in the city. the heart of the weekend, is the actual performance ‘dance africa’, wherein bam brings in a different dance troupe each year from around the diaspora for a week long string of shows. this year, brazilian dance group, balé folclórico da bahia will be setting the stage on fire. tickets begin at $20, so cop!
summer in brookyn means fishplates on deck and the best can be found during the dance africa bazaar at ashland place+lafayette avenue. there are also vendors with amazing jewelry, clothes, art, and other random wares. ya’ll know that black people love a percussion, so a drum circle will be in full effect and it’s encouraged that you dance off that fishplate and nutcracker.
since bam is always out to own you for a full weekend, they have also integrated a film festival, obvi titled ‘film africa’, into the celebration. beginning on friday (may 22), the team at bam has curated an amazing host of films. i’ll be in montreal for the front end of the weekend, but i am for sure rushing back to check out “august winds“. see the full lineup here and pleeeeeaaaasse check these films out in my absence.
brooklyn truly comes alive this weekend and you don’t wanna miss it. if you’re looking for me, i’ll be droppin’ it to the flo’ with a piece of whiting in my hand.
