i’m glad that i’m a member of the brooklyn academy of music, because without it, i’d be in the poor house. i’ve said it here and all over social media, but seriously no one does a film fest like bam!
i’m so excited that the ‘new voices in black cinema’ fest is back for year five! i’ve been going every year and it’s nothing but heat every time! i somehow managed to make plans to go to philly friday night like an idiot, but i will be first in line for the opening of the fest, “knucklehead“. starring alfre woodard and “the wire'”s gbenga akinnagbe, this film has been on everyone’s lips lately and i can’t wait to check it out. i’ll probably make it a double feature and see “of good report” as well.
other highlights include “life essentials with ruby dee” and “in the morning”. if you are interested in films that speak our language, show the beauty of our community, and tell our story, cop those tix! the full listing for the “new voices film fest’ can be found here.
editor’s note: on the theater tip, bam will be running, “the tallest tree in the forest”,chronicling the life of paul robeson alongside the black cinema fest. get your tickets here.
