a lot of factors went into the creation of this site. mainly, to save myself from the intense boredom from being unemployed, but also because everyone always says i’m obnoxiously plugged into the happs of pop culture and music. i only listen to wbls (the 45+ black people station) when i do listen to the radio, but the internet has served as a goldmine for newness from people closer to me in age. from tumblr to soundcloud, i’ve found myself being put on to pretty big acts when they first started releasing music. another outlet, 22 tracks, has had a serious hand in all of this music knowledge of mine and is how i found this month’s “you oughta know” artist.
so basically, 22 tracks is the hub for the top songs in every possible music genre grouped by country. even though london is often thought of as the mecca for blue eyed soul, 22 tracks does an awesome job shouting black r&r artists. so im jammin’ to miguel’s “nwa” and a song i’d never heard came on and i was immediately hooked.
that song was “adore you” by uk-based artist nao. before the vocals even started, i was taken in by the beat. my signature is a booty-tooted two-step and this song was perfect! then nao starts singing with some assistance from ahbi//dijon and i’m completely in. after listening to this song 10 million times, i spent the rest of the weekend on nao’s soundcloud page.
gems on gems on gems.
i love every single song from her “so good” ep, but there is nothing like the title track which features the dearly evaporated jai paul’s brother, ak paul. the beat is a hard bop, while the lyrics and melody are syrupy and seductive. nao also sings down on the bridge. i’m beyond excited for what nao will do in 2015, but for now, let’s body roll in unison to “so good”.
