if the release of d’angelo’s “black messiah” was any indication, 2015 will be the year of the real sanguhz. no shade to the artists being pushed into that oddly named alt-r&b sect, but traditional r&b is coming back in a major way. with artists like fantasia, king, and maxwell teasing release dates, songs that (in the words of k. michelle) have girls whispering over trap beats are kinda dead now. in case you’ve been under a rock, check out some of the newness january brought our way.
jazmine sullivan x reality show
we’re only one month in, but i declare “reality show” the best album of 2015. one listen of “let it burn” will explain why.
sam sparro x rock the boat
why even acknowledge sam smith’s existence when sam sparro is walking the earth??? this redo of aaliyah’s “rock the boat” is unreal.
future brown ft tink x room 302
five of my fave people got on one song and it’s obviously perfect.
jodeci x every moment”
the kangz is baaaaack!!!
letoya luckett x i’m ready
toya is my fave destiny child and her sophomore album was better than your faves. she’ll be blessing the world with a new album this year and “im ready” is the first glimpse.
dawn richard x castles
her face is kinda unrecognizable and she singlehandedly ruined the danity kane reunion, but “castles” from dawn richard is undeniable.
ciara x i bet
i love ciara. i hate future. this whole scenario was predicted on their iconic duet, “sorry“.
raheem devaughn x when you love somebody
noooooot gonna lie, my obsession with raheem devaughn began with “the love experience” and stayed there. his new jam “when you love somebody” from his upcoming album may finally pull me back into the future.
abra x make it
same 90s redux sound we’ve been hearing the last few years, but like my 2014 fave tinashe, abra actually has pipes! listen to her entire ep here.
