the day we’ve all been waiting for is here!!!!!
during his 14-year chill, i’ve seen d’angelo in concert three times: opening for mary j blige, a 3 hour jam session with questlove at the tla in philly, and afropunk fest. let it be known that he is just as funky as the first time we saw him in ’95.
“black messiah” (like jesus) is veryveryvery black. the chords throughout are just pure apostolic praise. the horn section is legit parliment, d is singing like the tent revival soloist that sneaks to the juke joints after and steals your woman. you have to pull out your hardest basement party moves to give the album it’s just due. in a time when our sound is being stolen (or being handed over by ti) and watered down to bland mush, it feels good to have an aural testament of who we are as a people documenting our magic.
to further round out this holy black monday, black american princess lionbabe finally dropped her long-awaited ep, “top five” (the blackest film we’ve seen in years) had a dynamite opening weekend, jazmine sullivan announced the pre-sale for “reality show” aaaand “you oughta know” alum jonathan hooks just dropped a visual for his song “angel flower”!!!! to further slay you, teedra moses just announced her latest album “california vibes” is dropping december 17th!
please remove your shoes because this week in black internet is holy ground.
*editor’s note: shouotut to kendra foster for her hand in “black messiah”. i met her during creative time’s “black radical brooklyn” exhibition and fell in love. dive into this little vid i took of her at the stuyvesant mansion.
