it’s so appropriate that chris rock and his new film “top five” come in as the 23rd edition of iso14below’s black excellence series. they are indeed too much for dese n*ggas and three much for dese hoes.
i saw “top five” at a screening with my clique on wednesday and i promise you i’ve never laughed so hard in my life! the film follows andre allen, a comedian attempting to be taken seriously in the industry, as he spends the day being profiled by a film critic (played by roasario dawson). “top five” houses an insane roster of characters (chris ofili’s work even has a cameo) that all lend to an amazing, albeit outrageous, story about black actors navigating fame. outside of being wildly entertaining, “top five” is also the blackest film i’ve seen in a very long time. there is so much coded language and small nods to our culture that can only be noticed by trained eyes. it’s the perfect red cup house party movie to share with a bunch of friends.
“top five” hits theaters today, so let’s fill up these seats and really show our support. this year has been an amazing one for black filmmakers, so it deserves to go out with a bang! what’s $13 for 2 hours of unparalleled black excellence?
i obvi couldn’t end this post without giving you my top five:
