as we come to the end of 2014, the theme that seemed to permeate this year was ‘trolling black people’. from baby hair on the runway to articles paying homage to every butt but a black one, it’s been a pretty rough year for us. there is obviously no light at the tunnel in the near future because this week it was announced that jessie j and ariana grande are linking up to do a “boy is mine” remake.
my beef isn’t that they’re white, even though there are tons of black artists that could’ve been selected. i’m not even debating their vocal prowess because jessie does a pretty good xtina impersonation and friends have told me that ariana is baby mariah (i’ve never listened to her music). i’m up in arms because both of these ladies are kinda corny with super corny fans that will in turn make the iconic “the boy is mine” corny. if there is one thing black folk avoid like the plague, it’s corniness. i’m obviously not going to listen to this remake since i value my precious childhood memories, but i’m pretty sure nothing good will come out of it.
to cheer myself up (and not rant on twitter), i compiled a list of my favorite covers. check ’em out below and feel free to leave your faves in the comments section.
