remember that scene in “love jones” when larenz tate and his questionable shape up showed up at nia long’s house trying to woo her? in the midst of a heavy holla, he quoted george bernard shaw saying “the goal of an artist is to create the definitive work that cannot be surpassed.” i always think of this scene, wondering if artists ever feels like they’ve achieved that goal (and bc darius lovehall still gets me open).
i’m excited to hear irl bud and friend to the blog, andre wagner share his thoughts on this and more at this week’s artist talk celebrating the release of his latest book, “the purist”.
dre’s first book “black boys” easily could’ve been defined as his most definitive work, but it looks like “the purist” is giving it a run for its money. compiled of images from his summer abroad, “the purist” captures the quiet, but immensly rich moments of daily life we often miss because we’re too busy staring at our phones. the title not only speaks to the way black + white film strips away the excess allowing you to truly see the subject, but also notes dre’s process. this dude makes his own prints! i’m like 96% sure it doesn’t get more pure than that.
even if it’s not thee project for dre, “the purist” will live in the land of visual legends. be apart of history and stop by the artist talk or at least get your hands on one of the 300 printed copies.

“i want people to really live with + digest the book. i want people to start from the front and think about every image ’til they get to the end…then repeat, but thinking about it holistically. i want people to read my images like they are flipping through pages of a novel. the images in the book will tell the story, not my writing. if that was the case I would just be a writer. i choose the medium of photography because I can’t quite describe the way i see and feel. “the purist vol 1″ will give viewers a raw and honest view of my travels throughout europe.” – andre wagner
