one of my fave things about nyc in the summer is all of the great places around the city to catch an outdoor movie. nothing beats your favorite movie with friends, bottles of vino (or hard liquor for you goons), and a warm summer breeze. i’ve been slacking royally on my usual weekly jaunts, but next tuesday, i will be front and center for “paris is burning” at valentino pier in red hook!
there has been so much boring/unnecessary chatter (i even joined in) about white gay men stealing black women’s swag, but “paris is burning” is the historical document of the culture that black gay men created for themselves that both black women and gay white men continue to pull from. “paris” is one of my favorite docs of all time and i’m so excited that the city is bringing this important and powerful part of nyc’s history to the (really)big screen. the film begins at 8:30pm, but i suggest getting there as early as possible because the children are sure to pack the house!
before i skip off to philly for the blackstar film fest (some more black excellence), here’s a little lesson about shade and reading. see you tuesday!
