so my temp job is over aka i’m unemployed again which means i’ve been scrambling to fill my days with something besides cover letters and blogging. i was lamenting to a friend last week about the sharp decline of black shows on tv from the 90s to now. said friend suggested that i run over to youtube and get my life changed. i have a thing (hate/hate relationship) with the word ‘sexy’, so i was adverse to watching black&sexytv and now i feel stupid because i’m obsessed. i devoured two seasons of “roomieloverfriend” in one sitting!
i also really enjoy the series “first” hosted on issa rae’s youtube page. the season is still playing out, so i’m under extreme stress waiting for a new episode. thankfully, “black actress” was waiting for me to find her. created and written by andrea lewis (who also stars as its lead) follows a struggling actress navigating through the murkiness of life and the industry. i should also mention that the show is based in brooklyn! ::confetti explodes:: the lead character, kori is super likable and you’ll find yourself rooting for her to win in all aspects of her life. her bestie, izzy is the girlfriend that we all love to have. a big highlight of the show is the intro/outro monologue in each episode from working black actresses, including the show’s producer tatyana ali. another fun little nugget about the show is that andrea lewis was the girl i loved to love and hate, hazel on degrassi. check out the first episode below and finish out the season on your next chill day.
youtube really brings out the addict in me, so after finishing a series, i immediately scour the ‘nets for another. in walks “downtown girls”. the series, written by jessica lamour, chronicles the crazy antics of four girlfriends in downtown (below 14th, hello?!) new york. when i say antics, i mean these girls are nuts, but in the best way. if you were anything like my friends and i in college, this will feel more like a documentary. season 2 is pon de way and i’m pretty excited. episode one awaits you.
some new black shows will be coming to a tv near you very soon. i’m super excited about anthony anderson’s “black-ish” (trailer here). also, big shoutout to “the couple” from the black&sexytv crew going into production at hbo. also, it looks like a tv version of “she’s gotta have it” is coming to showtime! with all of this amazing talent spanning tv and za innernetz, it’s important that we supportsupportsupport! anyone with me?
