new york is where friendships are made from of the most random connections. i met jonathan hooks through my louisiana-living cousin who was in philly taking care of her grandmother. they had gone to college together and with both jonathan and i living in new york, she wanted us to meet. besides being absurdly beautiful, he had the sweetest spirit. we’ve been friends since that summer a few years ago. the one thing my cousin forgot to mention is that jonathan can sing his entire face off.
fresh off of a successful indiegogo campaign to get his ep produced, i had to show the brother some major leave here on the blog. i could blab about how great his voice is, but i think after one listen of his song “hollywood”, i won’t have to do any convincing. i should note that he also writes all of his own stuff!
jonathan in his infinite coolness began hosting salons at people’s homes rounding up singers and musicians for a serious jam session, harlem renaissance style. the song above and another featured on his soundcloud page are from one those magical nights. even though going to harlem gives me a serious nosebleed (my blog has its name for a reason), i’m using this blogpost to beg jonathan to keep them coming during the summer months. i will be sure to alert you guys via twitter (@so14below) if my prayers get answered. to keep tabs on jonathan and his project, be sure to friend up his music page.
for an extra treat, enjoy is cover of imagine dragons’ “radioactive” with bassist pascal niggenkemper.
