happy monday frieeeeeeends!
it’s a sunny monday, so it’s perfect for another edition of “best album you’ve never heard”!!!! woooooooo!
if you haven’t noticed, music is my drug of choice. i’m a full out fiend. ::taps vein:: all day. eyyday. eyynight. i dip and dabble with a few, but one of my faves has had me hooked for the last year. all of this metaphorical talking is getting kinda cheesy, so basically what i’m saying is…cheri coke’s “x/coke” mix tape is one of the best albums you’ve never heard.
you know cheri coke because she also has one of the best r&b songs of all time in the form of “i love you“. yes my friends, cheri denis has morphed into cheri coke and the music is better than ever! i first experienced her new music live at a raw showcase at sob’s last year. i sobbed all over myself at the show, went home and copped her melo-x laced ep that night. i’ve legit listened to the ep everyday since the show.
cheri’s vocals and melo’s production are the perfect marriage. the ep is vibes on vibes on vibes with amazing songwriting. the opener “the garden of eden” followed by “the interlude” are standouts. the lyrics are sweet, but powerfully seductive. i feel like a frida kahlo, anais nin, and carrie mae weems hybrid listening to these tracks. pure, powerful woman badassery abounds. “lite years” is one of the most beautiful songs i’ve ever heard. i may or may not have cried a few times listening to it. “honorable mentions” is an interlude, but better than some people’s albums. cheri also sings her entire face off on this jawn. “free” should be the #newblack national anthem. here’s to living by your own rules and leaving people to deal with the weight of who you are! the ep closes with a dope portishead cover with cheri making the song all her own.
as i’m growing into this womanness thing, “x/coke” has been the perfect soundtrack. on the days when i’m feeling bleh, this ep, my fave hello kitty panties, and a dancefest in the mirror are an instant mood lifter. cheri coke totally speaks my language on “x/coke” and listening to the ep is like having the best round of girl talk. i saw her at a concert a few months ago and it took everything in me not to fangirl, but i could never thank her enough for this body of work. ntozake shange’s writing created my being and “x/coke” has def added the polish. i declared 2014 to be year of the real black girl and cheri coke totally embodies that.
