i got some news on friday that really took the “fun” out of funemployment. i love that i’ve had the time to create this site and another huge project i’ll share with you later, but being at the mercy of the us government for money has been pretty crappy. i usually post on a m/w/f schedule, but needed a day to wallow in immense emoness. with that being saaaaaaaid, here is the next installment of the black excellence series.
who doesn’t love a concept mixtape? the hardest to seamlessly create, but most rewarding once completed are mashups. the latest on the scene is “yasiin gaye” fusing yasiin baye (mos def) and marvin gaye from producer amerigo gazaway. with mos and marvelous marvin being two pillars of black excellence, i knew that my mind would be blown after the first listen.
welp, mind officially blown. gazaway made it sound more like one of those collab albums soul singers used to do back in the day than man made duets. i should also note that kanye west, tammi terrell, talib kweli, and the flawless teddy pendegrass make appearances. classic mos def bars and marvin crooning all sessy-like make this mix perfect for today’s alleged 61* weather. if you’re in brooklyn, take a long stroll around your neighborhood with “yasiin gaye” as the soundtrack. try your best to remain composed when “the panties” drops.
*editor’s note: “yasiin gaye” is just one installment of the “soul mates” series. i’ll be sure to keep you posted on upcoming releases. for now, here is some more goodness from amerigo gazaway including another mashup, “fela soul”.
