a constant theme on this blog is struggling to love nyc regardless of how quickly she flips the script on you. you can see all of my rambling about it here, here, and here. i stopped by two of my city faves this weekend that have gone through some change. after a ton of deep sighs and complaining, i found new things to love about my old faithfuls.
RIP Lovin Cup
you guys know i love a twofer, one space with two venues. cameo is a personal favorite. lovin’ cup for food in the front and cameo for shows/parties in the back. i’d been coming to this place for years and thanks to the two diff venues in one space, i’ve pulled many an all day-er there. happy hour was bomb. unlimited amounts of tater tots and then dancing the night away to whatever dj or band playing.
well, a few months ago i stopped by and realized that the menu had changed. i immediately scanned the menu for the tots and rosemary fries. those were safe, but the big a** burritto (it’s actual given name) and goddess sandwich (avocado, hummus, apple, cheddar) were gone-zo. frantically called the waitress over and all she knew was that the menu changed. cut to last week and the front door now read “cameo” and another waitress told me that the menu will be changing yet again. change is so skressfullllll!
in good news, the tots are still safe for now and the $4 happy hour drink has changed to rye punch, but it’s just as yummy as the bourbon punch. you might want to run over there before any of this disappears. there are events there pretty much every night, but i’ll be body rolling and scrubbing the ground and this party. see ya there!
(2016 update: RIP Cameo)
RIP Spicy Bacon Fries
ohhhh pianos. it’s truly a microcosm of new york city. a huge mashup of gross bros, cute artsy fartsies, even grosser wall street peeps, and everything in between. like cameo, pianos is a twofer. food and booze is on the first and second floor and mini concerts go down in a back room.
besides shows and life-altering margaritas, pianos is known for the spicy bacon fries. classic pianos fries topped with melted cheese, bacon, hot sauce, and other random sprinklings. they fell into the abyss a few months ago, but i’m still holding up the light that they will return. in the meantime, they’ve added a grilled thai chicken burger. sosososososososososo good aaaand if you go during their daily 2-8pm happy hour it’s only seven bucks with a side of fries. insane deals like this will keep me coming, but seriously, bring back the fries guys!
*editor’s note: went to see the internet last night at sob’s. i’ve seen them like 4, 5 times at this point and they are still the best band of our generation. listen to their tunes here. i listed their latest album as the second best album of 2013, so prepare for awesomeness.
