in my previous post about hipsteR&B, i struggled with whether or not to include the singer kimbra. she kind of straddles the genre fence, so i just decided to not include her. however, it was no way i could have this blog and not mention her because she is honestly one of the best voices in our generation.
most people heard of kimbra via gotye’s “somebody that i used to know”. i wasn’t a fan of the song, but i was obsessed with female vocal. i avoided hearing the song outside of the time my co-workers and i formed a lo-fi band (i was on xylophone) and performed it in a medley for the company holiday party. i bleached my brain of the song the day after the party, but i needed more of that voice. google gives the unknown voice the name kimbra, then instructs me to get her album, “vows”. a zillion tears shed later over its epicness, i bought tickets to her upcoming concert. i barely made it out alive between the dancing, singing, and obviously weeping.
that was 2012 and i’ve been waiting for some newness for forever! my friend that works for her label posted a cryptic tweet yesterday saying “new kimbra music…” and i’ve been on a downward spiral ever since. after you watch this video, i’m sure that you’ll want to join me.
*editor’s note: download “vows” and if you still have the willpower to be vocally annihilated, watch a sam lawrence (the absurdly attractive, velvet-voiced man in the above video) video here.
