i try to be as ‘back to nature’ as possible in the 21st century.
…and by ‘back to nature’ i mean 1986.
i like to talk on the phone, write letters, etc as much as i can for the sake of feeling human. i do thank technology however for giving me a gift in the form of tumblr. granted i follow mostly angsty teens, but they have the most interesting scope on the world and their hands are always heavily on the pulse of all things artistic.
today i woke up to this post and immediately ran to my (borrowed. thanks nikki!) netflix page and watched .”the woodmans” is a doc about the woodman family, their presence in the art world, their daughter’s tragic death, and life after. from the story about how the parents met, i was hooked. as the story continued, the film began to focus on their daughter francesca’s photography. photo after photo of just pure excellence! i’m a huge fan of man ray and francesca’s work is the modernity of it and quite frankly, may even surpass it in terms of definitive work. think i’m exaggerating? check it. please keep in mind, these photos were produced by francesa from the ages of 16 until her suicide at 22.
what the hell were you doing at 22?!
as the movie went on, i oddly began to think about kanye and all of his interviews lately. the need to create and the opportunity to produce on a grand scale is so real. kanye has turned into the american laughing stock, but here we have francesca woodman who took her life because her truman show boat had hit the painting. as someone that considers herself a creative, i walked away from this film with a huge oprah-esque ‘aha!’ moment. daily inspiration is essential to ones livelihood. i mean, 20 minutes into the movie i’m thinking about what materials i have so i could paint something. meanwhile, i haven’t picked up a paintbrush since my 8th grade art class. my mind has expanded to the other creative talents i have that i’ve never given an out to. what’s important is to keep the momentum going, which is allllllways the hard part. the ultimate goal of being renowned for your work alludes many of us, but today i’ll just be thankful for the talents. don’t fret though, i’m sure the frustrated kanye-lite rant essays will find their way onto the blog soon enough.
until then, check out the film, “the woodmans” and let it inspire you to epicness.
