i was all prepped to do a review for amel larrieux’s album “ice cream everyday” that dropped today, but for some reason, i couldn’t stop thinking about another girl/boy duo i love, denetia + sene.
like groove theory, denetia + sene are a singing and production twosome that make really smoove-groove jams, but they have a fresh, current sound. their ep “his and hers” has been on heavy rotation since i saw them at this showcase at sob’s in april. lynette williams, olamide (yup, that olamide) and cheri denis performed that night too. it was pretty epic. “trip.fall” is def one of my fave songs this year. you guys should download their ep and keep an eye out for their next performance. the music is dope and both of them are beauties.
so back to the original post…my favorite song this summer was “afraid” by amel larriuex. i’ve always been a stan since the groove theory days (the chorus of “infinite possibilities” was my quote in my senior year book), but i was just loving the nostalgia of amel. when “afraid” dropped though, i was essentially worshipping at melly’s feet. today, we see the release of her looooooong awaited “ice cream everyday”.
i’m like the eternal 17-year old, but there are certain books or songs that make me feel like a woman. not like an adult female, but a red lipstick, big hips, line-up-your pantyhose woman. “a million sapphires” just fell into that category. “berries and cream” also. i almost skipped “i do take” because it started slow, but aye dios mio, the bridge! ::shouting emoji hands:: “you don’t see me” and “see where you are” are two other gems. groove theory did a show in central park last summer and i barely made it out alive for dancing and weeping. i’m sure the tour for this album will leave me in the same place.
homecoming is DAYS away, so I prob should be listening to nothing but songs that encourage me to buss it open, but i may have throw in some jams from “ice cream everyday” for baaaalance.
amel larrieux and questlove went to prom together because philly breeds nothing but legends.
